Partido de Pinamar History

For several years, Pinamar dunes witnessed unfinished projects, different protagonists, crimes of passion, and political mutinies. Finaly, when Ostende´s dream falls during 1930´s Rebellion against the president Hipólito Hirigoyen, Pinamar´s project comes to life.

While interstate road N° 74 is finished (1938), Las Armas – Madariaga segment, Valeria Guerrero Cárdenas de Russo hires the architect Jorge Bunge to begin a tree planting along a part of her lands. In 1939 they sign a contract by wich 26,840 square metres would be sown by the architect, who would receive 41,000 pesos national coin and get the majority of the shares in case of succeeding, and that these shares would return to the prior owner if the atempt failed.

The tree planting and dunes attachment begins in 1941. This particular year turns out to be extremely rainy, which favours the trees growing. In 1942 a partnership between Valeria Guerrero and Jorge Bunge becomes official. Important industrial and business members join the organization and they name the new enterprise Pinamar. The same year, the Pinamar Hotel is built, today the Playas Hotel, and several private summer houses are set on Del Tuyú St., De la Sirena St., Del Odiseo St., and Del Caracol St.; today called “El Dromedario”, “La Pionera”, “Marejada”. On 14th February, 1943, Pinamar is settled as a coastal and touristic city.

In 1944, the Executive Power from Buenos Aires Province, passes Bunges plan “El Plan Director”, which guided the building and urbanization, taking into account the topography of the area. Set aside by this project, Valeria Guerrero decides to settle her own coastal city on the rest of the lands she still owned on the Atlantic Ocean. During the years 1946 and 1947 begins the tree planting along the area that today is Valeria del Mar and the society Balnearios del Atlántico S.A.

In 1948 a transport service for passengers starts operating between Pinamar and Buenos Aires. The “Al Mar” transport service established by Herman Parini. On 14th February 1949, the train lines reached Pinamar after petitions made by Juan Pablo Russo Abelardo Acosta –Madariaga´s Mayor-. The train stop was held on today´s Constitución St. and Intermédanos Av. intersection.

In 1950 borns “La Cooperativa de Agua y Luz de Pinamar –CALP” (Pinamar´s Water and Light Co-opeartive), which had been petitioned by the Neighbours Union together with a concrete road between Pinamar and General Madariaga. Apart from those improvements, the Neighbours Union asked for a small market, a first-aid room, and a shops area.

Between 1954 and 1960 a group of people settled down, and different commissions as Club de Pesca (the Fishing Club), Sociedad de Fomento, and Comision Pro-Templo began to appear. These institutions are still functioning and accomplishing the pourposes for which they were created. For example, in 1955, the head commision for the Fishing Club is chosen, they started organizing social meetings, dinners, youth parties, cinema displays, when they didn´t even had a place of their own. During Summer holidays, fishing contests and other activities were held in order to raise founds to buil the official meeting place, that today is located on Bunge Av.: “La Távola”.

On 13th August 1961 dies Jorge Bunge, the architect whose knowledge –quite ahead for its times- made the creation of the beautiful city of Pinamar possible.

On 14th November 1962, Dr. Enrique Susini promoted the Pinamar Telephone Cooperative TELPIN, pioneer of national and international direct dialing. Today, it is a model institution, functioning as a real cooperative by favouring its associates with free local calls due to its superavit.

A few years later, Pinamar S.A. donated lands for the Pinamar Aeroclub creation, opened in 1969, with a plane hanger big enough for eight small planes.

Promoted by Lidia Roldan and a group of people, in 1970, the Manuel Belgrano library is created along with its executive commission. In 1978, this commission inaugurates the current location, with a computarized system that is an important source of information.

In 1978, the Buenos Aires Province law 9,024 is passed, by which Pinamar and General Madariaga become two different districts. On 23rd May 1983, by the 9,949 law the original name changes for “Partido de Pinamar” and Pinamar becomes the main district. In 1985, by the 10,365 law Pinamar is declared a city

In 1991, the Pinamar Ecological Foundation is created, working with the project “Estación para la preservación del patrimonio marítimo costero” (coastline heritage preservation station). It counts with a museum located on Pinamar North beaches; and around it, an area has been destined for sea animals recovery. This organization also organizes eco-trips to the dunes reservation and Cariló´s forest.

On 7th December 1996, Pinamar recovers the train service, with a train stop called “Divisadero” on Ruta 74, on General Madariaga´s lands.

On 18th July 1991, agroup gathered by the Historical Museum Friends Association creates the Historical Museum of Pinamar (El Museo Histórico de Pinamar), on the N°3 School Museum (Ostende).

On 6th April 1999, the first Municipal Park Cemetery in the country is opened in Pinamar, concreting a desired wish of Pinamar inhabitants.
